To assess changes in passive mechanical properties, associated protein structure, and histology of multifidus in response to disc degeneration produced by experimental needle puncture.

Summary of Background Data. Relationships have been reported between muscle dysfunction and low back injury; however, little is known about the cause and effect of such relationships.

Methods. Twelve rabbits were studied; 4 in each

of 3 groups: control, 4-weeks postintervertebral disc injury (4-week disc degeneration), and 12-weeks KPT-8602 in vivo postintervertebral disc injury (12-week disc degeneration). Single multifidus fibers and bundles of fibers were isolated and tested for slack sarcomere length and elastic modulus. Titin isoform 3-deazaneplanocin A cost mass, myosin heavy chain distribution, and muscle histology were also examined.

Results. Compared to control, individual muscle fibers were 34% stiffer and fiber bundles 107% stiffer in the 12-week disc degeneration group. No changes were detected at 4-week disc degeneration. No statistically significant change was found for MHC distribution in the 12-week disc degeneration group when compared to control, whereas titin isoforms were larger (P < 0.05) in the 12-week disc degeneration group. Histology revealed select regions of multifidus, at 12-week disc degeneration, with increased

space between bundles of fibers, which in some instances was partly occupied by adipose tissue.

Conclusion. Multifidus becomes stiffer, both in individual fibers and fiber bundles, in response to experimentally induced intervertebral disc degeneration. This cannot be explained

by change in fiber-type due to reduced muscle use, nor by the increased size of the protein titin (which would reduce stiffness). waist-hip ratio (Whratio) were only available from 1998 onwards. We found that the association between systolic BP and body weight, body mass index, %body fat, Whratio and waist became stronger for both men and women in 2006 than 1996 after adjustment for age, education level, alcohol intake, smoking and betel nut chewing. In contrast, non-obese people seemed to have lower diastolic BP in 2006 than in 1996. This trend is consistent irrespective of the index of obesity used. Among healthy individuals, the average values for the obesity indices increased in men but remained similar in women. However, in both men and women, the relationship between obesity and BP has changed. therapy (ERT). Nine (47%) out of 19 patients had implantable devices. Mean follow-up in the patients with devices was 50 +/- 23 months. Two patients received implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) shocks, 1 of which was inappropriate for atrial fibrillation. Patients were paced in the atrium 71% +/- 37% of the time and paced in the ventricle 49% +/- 52% of the time. Four patients with devices were paced more than 95% of the time. “Objectives: It is currently unclear whether the parallels between abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are explained by common risk factors alone, such as cigarette smoking, or by a predetermined cause. Given the persistent controversy with regard

to the association between AAA and COPD, we studied this association in depth.

Methods: We conducted a case control study comparing patients with a small AAA (maximum infrarenal diameter 35-50 mm, n = 221) with controls diagnosed with peripheral artery disease (PAD, n = 87). The controls were matched to the cases for lifetime cigarette smoking. Pulmonary function was measured by spirometry, and all subjects completed a questionnaire on medical history and smoking habits (current, former and never smokers).

Results: Aneurysm patients were similar to controls with Aurora Kinase inhibitor respect to gender (p = 0.71), lifetime cigarette smoking

(39 vs. 34 pack years, p = 0.23) and history of cardiovascular disease (45% vs. 55%, p = 0.12). Aneurysm patients had more airway obstruction (forced expiratory volume in 1 s/forced vital capacity (FEV1/FVC) (0.69 +/- 0.12 vs. 0.78 +/- 0.11, p < 0.001)), which was most pronounced in never smokers (0.73 +/- 0.07 vs. 0.86 +/- 0.07, p < 0.001). COPD was more prevalent in aneurysm patients (44%; 98/221) than in controls (20%; 17/87) (adjusted odds ratio (OR) 3.0; 95% confidence interval (95%CI) 1.6-5.5, p < 0.001). In particular, a major proportion of AAA patients was newly diagnosed with COPD; only 40 of 98 patients (41%) with COPD (mild, moderate or severe/very severe) were known before with obstructive pulmonary defects and received treatment.

operated prostate cancer patients, functional relationships of total testosterone (tt) predicting free testosterone (ft) and total PSA. Patients and Methods: 128 operated prostate cancer patients were simultaneously investigated for tt, ft and PSA before surgery. Scatter plots including ft and PSA versus tt were computed in order to assess the functional relationship of the variables. Linear regression analysis of tt predicting ft and PSA was computed. Results: tt was a significant predictor of the response variable (ft) and different subsets of the patient population were assessed according to the ft to tt ratio. PSA was related to tt according to a nonlinear law. tt was a significant predictor of PSA according to an inversely nonlinear law and different significant clusters of the patient population were assessed according to the different constant of proportionality computed from experimental data.
