Pigments were extracted using methanol (95%), and the extract was mixed with 1 M ammonium acetate as the ion pairing reagent. It was then filtered through 0.2 μm PTFE filter (Whatman) and mixed with milli-Q water (5:1 v:v); thereafter 500 μl was injected into the HPLC system (Shimadzu) equipped with a Symmetry C8 column (Waters).
